City warns of sewer overflows

S

Manchester City announced Thursday, Jan. 26 that due to excessive rainfall, the city sewer is currently experiencing several overflows within the system.

These areas include Skinner Flat Road, Spring Street Bridge and Dave King Park (near the railroad bridge).

“Discharges from these overflows consist, or likely consist, of untreated or partially treated sewage and waste. The public is advised to avoid contact with impacted water bodies for 48 hours after the discharge or overflow ceases due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants,” the announcement reads.

Introducing storm water into sewers prohibited

City officials also asked the public to check to make sure that any outdoor clean out caps be sealed to prevent rainwater from entering the system.

“You can also help by making sure that your sewer clean out caps are in place and not broken or missing. These are often hit by lawn mowers and neglected to be repaired,” the notice reads.

The city has noted that some residents have removed the “covers to allow the water in their yard to drain into the sewer. Please note that this a direct violation of city codes. No storm water is purposefully allowed to enter the sanitary sewer system. This also includes roof downspouts, parking lot drains, etc.”

The city directs questions concerning this or know of a potential problem related to this to the Manchester Water & Sewer Department at 728-1273.
